Biography
Digable Planets is an American hip hop trio formed in the late 1980s, consisting of rappers Ishmael 'Butterfly' Butler (originally from Seattle), Mariana 'Ladybug Mecca' Vieira (from Silver Spring, Maryland), and Craig 'Doodlebug' Irving (from Philadelphia). Butler and Irving met in Philadelphia, where Butler was visiting family while interning at Sleeping Bag Records in New York, and Irving was rapping with the Dread Poets Society; Vieira connected through Howard University. They relocated to Brooklyn, New York, signed with Pendulum Records in 1992, and released their debut album Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) in 1993, which went gold and featured the crossover hit 'Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat),' sampling Art Blakey and winning a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
The group's musical style blended jazz rap, east coast hip hop, acid jazz, and old school hip hop, incorporating samples from jazz icons like Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker, and Curtis Mayfield, alongside funk, samba, and psychedelia. Their 1994 sophomore album Blowout Comb pushed boundaries further with live instrumentation from artists like Donald 'Duck' Harrison, emphasizing live performances over samples. The trio disbanded in 1995 due to creative differences but reunited in 2005 for tours and a compilation album Beyond the Spectrum: The Creamy Spy Chronicles, with further activity including tours with the Cosmic Funk Orchestra (2009-2011) and a 2017 live album.
Digable Planets' legacy lies in epitomizing jazz-rap fusion, bringing laid-back jazz hip-hop to mainstream success and influencing alternative hip hop. Post-breakup, Butler formed Shabazz Palaces and Cherrywine, composed for brands like Pepsi, and acted; all members pursued solo projects while the group continued sporadic reunions and global tours.
