Biography

David 'Fathead' Newman was born on February 24, 1933, in Corsicana, Texas. His family moved to Dallas, where he grew up listening to jazz legends like Louis Armstrong and Count Basie. Newman began playing piano but switched to saxophone at age ten. He attended Lincoln High School and later received a scholarship to Jarvis Christian College, studying theology and music. After college, he toured with Henry 'Buster' Smith, which led to his meeting Ray Charles. Newman joined Charles's band in 1954, initially playing baritone saxophone before becoming the star tenor soloist. His debut album, Fathead: Ray Charles Presents David Fathead Newman, was released in 1959. Newman's career spanned multiple genres, including hard bop, bebop, and soul jazz, with collaborations with renowned artists like Herbie Mann and Dr. John. He was known for his unique style that blended different musical genres, earning him the respect of his peers and the title of 'musician's musician.' Newman passed away on January 20, 2009, leaving behind a legacy of rich musical contributions. His work continued to inspire new audiences, especially after the film Ray in 2004, which highlighted his contributions to Ray Charles's band.
