Daniel Caesar

Biography

Ashton Dumar Norwill Simmonds, known professionally as Daniel Caesar, was born on April 5, 1995, in the Scarborough district of Toronto, Ontario, and raised in Oshawa as the second eldest of four children to mother Hollace Burnett-Simmonds and father Norwill Simmonds, a gospel singer and pastor who released his first album as a high school student in Jamaica. Of Bajan and Jamaican descent, Caesar grew up in a Seventh-day Adventist Church environment, singing in his father's congregation and immersing himself in soul and gospel music, despite his parents' caution about the music industry's temptations. At age 17, following a fight with his father around his high school graduation, he was kicked out of the house, experienced brief homelessness, and committed fully to music by performing gigs and releasing his debut EP Praise Break in 2014, which earned critical acclaim including a spot on Rolling Stone's '20 Best R&B Albums of 2014'.[1][2][3][4]

Caesar's career accelerated with his second EP Pilgrim's Paradise in 2015, featuring fan favorites like 'Streetcar' and a cover of Kanye West's 'Street Lights', produced with the help of Jordan Evans and Matthew Burnett after an introduction by Sean Leon. His 2017 debut album Freudian, with singles 'Get You' (ft. Kali Uchis), 'We Find Love', and 'Blessed', brought widespread acclaim, three Grammy nominations including a win for Best R&B Performance with H.E.R., and a Polaris Music Prize shortlist. Subsequent releases include Case Study 01 (2019), a feature on Justin Bieber's #1 hit 'Peaches' (2021) with Giveon earning four Grammy nods, Never Enough (2023) winning a Juno Award, and Son of Spergy (2025), his first Billboard 200 top-ten album. His style blends neo-soul, R&B, gospel, and 1990s influences like Jodeci and D’Angelo, rooted in religion and unrequited love.[1][2][3][4]

Caesar's legacy includes building a massive independent following via SoundCloud, achieving high streaming numbers (e.g., 'Get You' over 25 million on Spotify), and multiple award nominations, establishing him as a leading figure in modern R&B with a popularity score of 85 on Spotify. His music reflects personal vulnerability, spiritual undertones, and emotional depth, influencing contemporary soul artists while maintaining critical and commercial success across four studio albums.[1][3][4]
