Biography
Joseph Roy "Chubby" Carrier Jr. was born on July 1, 1967, in Church Point, Louisiana, into one of the most storied dynasties in zydeco music. His grandfather Warren Carrier was a working zydeco musician, and his father Roy Carrier Sr. became a beloved figure on the Louisiana circuit, with cousins Bebe and Calvin Carrier (the Carrier Brothers) adding further luster to the family name. Growing up surrounded by rehearsals and performances, Chubby absorbed the accordion-and-washboard sound from childhood. He began his professional life at age 12 playing drums with his father's band, then switched to accordion at 15. The decisive break came at 17, when Terrance Simien — already a rising zydeco star — recruited him to drum for Terrance Simien and the Mallet Playboys. For roughly two and a half years (1986–1989), Carrier toured Europe and opened 14 shows for Fats Domino, gaining international exposure rare for Louisiana musicians of any age.
In 1989, Carrier returned home and founded Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band, first signing with Blind Pig Records and later Flying Fish Records, before launching his own Swampadelic Records imprint in 2000. He released thirteen studio and live albums between 1989 and 2015, performing at marquee festivals including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the Chicago Blues Festival, and the Montreux Jazz Festival, and logging 150–175 performance dates per year at his peak. His sound — which he describes as "a big pot of gumbo" — blends classic zydeco accordion with 1970s funk, blues, and rock-and-roll grooves, designed first and foremost to get people dancing.
That philosophy peaked commercially and critically with the 2010 album Zydeco Junkie, released on his own Swampadelic Records, which won the Grammy Award for Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album at the 53rd Grammy Awards (2011) — a category that Terrance Simien had petitioned the Recording Academy for seven years to establish. The same year, Carrier was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame (October 16, 2011), cementing his place among the genre's elite. Beyond performing, Carrier has been active in youth music education — bringing zydeco into schools and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Acadiana — and served as a national spokesman for the ANR Foundation's Smokefree Music Cities initiative after his father's death from lung cancer attributed to decades of performing in smoke-filled Louisiana venues.

Fun Facts
- The U.S. State Department selected Carrier for a cultural diplomacy tour of Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, and Sudan — countries with no prior exposure to zydeco — using his music as a vehicle for international cultural exchange.
- Most fans know Carrier as an accordionist, but his international debut was as the drummer for Terrance Simien's band. He had only been playing accordion for two years when Simien recruited him specifically for his drumming skills.
- After his father Roy Carrier Sr. died of lung cancer following decades performing in smoky Louisiana venues, Chubby became a national spokesman for the ANR Foundation's Smokefree Music Cities initiative and appeared in airport advertisements, saying: 'I want to leave a longer music legacy to my family and fans than my father was able to leave to me.'
- He founded Swampadelic Records at age 33 rather than chase major label deals, and the Grammy-winning Zydeco Junkie — released a full decade later — came out entirely on his own self-owned imprint, meaning the Grammy win went to an independent label he controlled.
