Biography
Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah, formerly known as Christian Scott, was born on March 31, 1983, in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he was immersed in the city's rich musical heritage from birth. He began playing trumpet at age 11 and by age 12 was studying under his uncle, the legendary saxophonist Donald Harrison Jr., positioning him as a prodigy in the jazz world. After graduating from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) in 2001 at the top of his high school class, he received a full tuition scholarship to Berklee College of Music, where he earned a degree in Professional Music and Film Scoring in just 30 months, launching a career that would establish him as one of the most innovative voices in contemporary jazz.
Adjuah is the progenitor and leader of the Stretch Music movement, a genre-blind musical form that blends jazz with hip-hop, rock, and music from around the world, stretching jazz's rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic conventions to encompass multiple musical forms and cultures. He is known for developing the harmonic convention called the "forecasting cell" and for his distinctive "whisper technique," which emphasizes breath over vibration at the mouthpiece, creating an un-voiced tone that distinguishes his playing. Since 2002, he has released 13 critically acclaimed studio recordings, multiple live albums, and one greatest hits collection, earning six Grammy nominations and two Edison Awards. According to NPR, Adjuah "ushers in new era of jazz," and JazzTimes Magazine has hailed him as "Jazz's young style God" and "The architect of a commercially viable fusion."
Beyond his musical innovations, Adjuah has established himself as a sonic architect and entrepreneur, founding the Stretch Music record label and app company, designing innovative musical instruments including the Adjuah Trumpet and Siren, and serving as Chieftain of the Xodokan Nation of the Black Tribes of New Orleans. His work has garnered recognition including a PBS American Masters special, JAZZ FM's Innovator/Innovation of the Year Award, a Doris Duke Award in the Arts, and induction into the inaugural Black Genius Brain Trust. He is the identical twin brother of filmmaker and visual artist Kiel Adrian Scott and the grandson of Big Chief Donald Harrison Sr., continuing a legacy of musical and cultural innovation in New Orleans.
