Childish Gambino

Biography

Donald McKinley Glover Jr., born September 25, 1983, grew up in Edwardsville, Illinois, before moving to Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from New York University Tisch School of the Arts in 2006 with a degree in Dramatic Writing, after which his writing for shows like 30 Rock and performances in Community launched his acting career. Adopting the stage name Childish Gambino—generated via a Wu-Tang Clan name generator—he debuted musically with the 2008 mixtape Sick Boi while still on 30 Rock, blending smart, goofy rap styles influenced by hip-hop and comedy.[2][3][4][5][6]

Glover's music career escalated with mixtapes like Culdesac (2010), followed by his Glassnote Records debut album Camp (2011), co-produced with Ludwig Göransson, which charted on the Billboard 200. Because the Internet (2013) earned Grammy nominations, Awaken, My Love! (2016) featured the hit 'Redbone,' and 'This Is America' (2018) topped charts worldwide, winning four Grammys including Song and Record of the Year—the first for a hip-hop artist in those categories. He announced retiring the Gambino name after 2018's output but released Atavista (2024) and Bando Stone & the New World soundtrack, citing logistical challenges amid acting, TV (creator/star of Atlanta, which won Emmys), and film projects like Spider-Man films and Mufasa: The Lion King.[1][2][3][4][5]

Glover's style fuses rap, R&B, funk, and soul with introspective, socially conscious lyrics addressing race, violence, and identity, often tied to his multifaceted career as actor, director, writer, and comedian. His legacy spans groundbreaking music, Emmy-winning TV, and cultural impact, evolving from mixtapes to stadium tours before semi-retiring the persona for new creative ventures like the Gilga incubator.[2][4]
