Biography
Carlos Galhardo, born Catello Carlos Guagliardi on April 24, 1913, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, began his musical career in Brazil during the Era do Rádio. His professional debut occurred at a family party on October 1, 1932, where he impressed figures like Francisco Alves and Mário Reis by performing 'Deusa.' Adopting the stage name Carlos Galhardo, he released his first solo record in 1933 with frevos 'Você Não Gosta de Mim' and 'Que É Que Há?,' marking the start of a prolific career that saw him record 303 78 rpm discs—606 songs total—making him the second most-recorded Brazilian singer after Francisco Alves.[1]
Galhardo's career flourished across radio stations in Rio de Janeiro, including Mayrink Veiga, Rádio Clube, and Rádio Nacional, and he worked with labels like RCA Victor (for 35 years), Columbia, Odeon, and Continental. Key successes included Assis Valente compositions like 'Boas Festas' (his first major hit), 'Para Onde Irá o Brasil,' and a duet with Carmen Miranda on 'É Duro de Se Crer,' alongside carnival hits such as 'Carolina' (1934), 'Mariana' (1935), and 'Cortina de Veludo' (1936). Known for carnival songs, waltzes, festive themes like 'Boneca de Papai Noel,' and adaptations such as the 1945 Branca de Neve with Dalva de Oliveira, he earned nicknames like 'Rei do disco,' 'O rei da valsa,' and 'O cantor que dispensa adjetivos.' In 1952, he performed in Portugal, and later advocated for interpreters' rights, contributing to the 1966 law and leading Socimpro.[1]
Galhardo continued performing nationwide, including on television, with his final show in 1983 in Allah-lá-ô dedicated to Antônio Nássara. He died on July 25, 1985, in Rio de Janeiro at age 72 and was buried in Cemitério São João Batista, leaving a legacy as a radio-era icon and champion of musicians' rights.[1]
