Biography
Bill Laurance was born on April 2, 1981, in North London, England, where he began learning piano as a child and performed on organ at London's Union Chapel at age 9. He received formal classical training, studying classical music, composition, and performance at the University of Leeds, while also exploring jazz, funk, and drum and bass. At age 14, he became a resident performer at a small restaurant in London's Soho district, where he honed his skills in ragtime and swing before transitioning to jazz.
Laurance's professional breakthrough came in the early 2000s when he met bassist Michael League at the University of Leeds during a chance pick-up gig. This meeting led to his invitation to join the newly forming Snarky Puppy, a jazz fusion and funk collective, before the recording of their debut album The Only Constant in 2006. As a founding member of Snarky Puppy, Laurance achieved international acclaim and won five Grammy Awards, establishing himself as a leading figure in contemporary jazz fusion. His work with the band showcases his ability to blend complex musical ideas with emotional depth and technical virtuosity.
Beyond Snarky Puppy, Laurance has built a flourishing solo career beginning with his debut album Flint in 2014, followed by Swift, Aftersun, and his first live album Live at Union Chapel. His solo work is characterized by a genre-defying blend of jazz, classical, electronic, and world music, exploring sonically textured instrumental music that combines piano with analog synthesizers and electronics. He also leads his own trio, collaborates with orchestras worldwide including the WDR Big Band and Manchester's Untold Orchestra, and maintains a duo project with Michael League. In 2023, he released his first completely solo acoustic piano album, demonstrating his versatility across multiple musical contexts. Laurance is also the founder and CEO of London-based record label Flint Music and serves as an active lecturer, passing his creative approach and experience to younger musicians.
