Biography
Barney Kessel (October 17, 1923 – May 6, 2004) was an American jazz guitarist renowned for his technical mastery, improvisational brilliance, and versatility across genres. Born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, to Russian Jewish immigrant parents, Kessel was drawn to the guitar at age twelve after spotting one in a pawn shop window while delivering newspapers. By his mid-teens, he was already performing professionally in local bands, absorbing the vibrant sounds of jazz and popular music in the African American entertainment district where he grew up.
Kessel moved to Los Angeles in the early 1940s, quickly establishing himself as a first-call guitarist in both jazz and popular music circles. He played with the Chico Marx Band, Charlie Barnet, and Artie Shaw, and appeared in the iconic jazz film 'Jammin’ the Blues' in 1944. He became a prolific session musician, recording with jazz legends like Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, and Oscar Peterson, as well as pop and rock icons such as Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, and Sam Cooke. In the 1950s and 1960s, he was a core member of the famed 'Wrecking Crew,' contributing to countless hit records. Kessel also led his own groups, most notably the Poll Winners trio with Ray Brown and Shelly Manne, and later co-founded the celebrated Great Guitars ensemble with Herb Ellis and Charlie Byrd.
Kessel’s style blended the melodic inventiveness of his idol Charlie Christian with a sophisticated sense of harmony and orchestration, making him a pivotal figure in cool jazz, bebop, and hard bop. His influence extended through his recordings, his work as a producer and A&R director, and his educational writings. Widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz guitarists of the 20th century, Kessel’s legacy endures in the playing of countless guitarists who followed.
